NDMA provides shelter for 226 after heavy rain floods Male

The heaviest rainfall on Friday was recorded in Hulhule at 144 mm, while Male registered 142.2 mm.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has provided temporary shelter and food for 226 individuals from 36 households in Male following heavy rains that caused significant flooding across the city on Friday.

Friday's downpour led to waterlogging in several areas, damaging parked vehicles and requiring the drainage of more than 30,000 tonnes of water. The NDMA reported 774 flood incidents across Male, including:

  • 554 requests for sandbags.

  • 53 households reporting obstruction of essential needs, assessed by police and the Red Crescent.

The rains also affected other islands, with varying levels of damage reported:

  • R. Inguraidhoo and Sh. Maroshi: Reports of bad weather and flooding.

  • F. Nilandhoo: 80% of the island was flooded.

  • Dh. Kudahuvadhoo and Dh. Meedhoo: 10 houses flooded.

  • F. Magoodhoo: Nine houses were damaged, with one requiring evacuation.

  • ADh. Maamigili: Four houses severely damaged.

  • K. Guraidhoo: 60 houses experienced damage.

  • F. Feeali: Flooding led to evacuation from one house.

  • K. Hinmafushi: 60% of houses were flooded.

The heaviest rainfall on Friday was recorded in Hulhule at 144 mm, while Male registered 142.2 mm. Other significant rainfall levels included:

  • Hulhumale: 122 mm.

  • ADh. Maamigili: 113 mm.

  • AA. Thoddoo: 78.9 mm.

Heavy rains are anticipated in the central and northern regions on Saturday. However, the weather is expected to gradually improve over the next two days.
