6 islands report flooding amid heavy rains
While reports indicate some damage, the NDMA stated that no evacuations have been necessary.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Friday reported flooding in six islands across the Maldives due to ongoing heavy rains.
The affected islands include:
-
Sh. Narudhoo
-
R. Inguraidhoo
-
Dh. Kudahuvadhoo
-
Dh. Meedhoo
-
F. Nilandhoo
-
F. Magoodhoo
While reports indicate some damage, the NDMA stated that no evacuations have been necessary. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is actively working to drain floodwaters on the affected islands.
The heavy rains coincide with the New Year holidays and have been exacerbated by a cyclone in southeastern Maldives, along with a low-pressure trough associated with the system.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued an orange alert for the central region, warning of continued adverse weather conditions.
