Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecast heavy rainfall in the northern and central parts of the country on Saturday, but predicts a gradual improvement in weather conditions over the next 48 hours.

The northeastern monsoon, which began recently, has contributed to the adverse weather. Friday's rainfall caused flooding in several islands across the northern and central regions.

As of 6 pm Saturday, the MET expects:

  • Rain in parts of the northern and central regions.

  • Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms in some areas.

  • Showers in parts of the southern region.

Wind speeds are projected to reach 35 mph in cloudy conditions, leading to stronger seas with wave heights of 4-6 feet.

Yesterday, the heaviest rainfall was recorded in Hulhule with 144 mm, while Male experienced 142.2 mm. Other significant rainfall levels included:

  • Hulhumalé: 122 mm.

  • ADh. Maamigili: 113 mm.

  • AA. Thoddoo: 78.9 mm.

The MET advises caution for those in affected areas, particularly for maritime activities, until conditions stabilise.
