The Maldives Democratic Party (MDP)’s National Assembly passed a resolution on Wednesday evening expressing concern over the unfair dismissals of people by the government, saying they would further look into it and would directly come out against it.

The resolution was passed unanimously by all the members present at the meeting held at the MDP office in G.Niusha/Male.

The resolution was moved by the MDP National Assembly President for Thimarafushi constituency Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar's resolution said the MDP is concerned that the government is dismissing employees without any base or justice. Therefore, it is a resolution to ensure justice for those who are dismissed from service, and look into such government business instead of just watching on, the resolution said.

The resolution also includes direct action if necessary, which means to take to the streets, most likely.

The resolution also passed for a five-member committee. Anwar also proposed the names of five members to the committee. The five names are:

  • MDP Vice President Hisaan Hussain

  • Legal Director Mahfooz Saeed

  • Mauroof Zakir, MP, Kendhoo Constituency

  • Alifushi Constituency President Mohamed Rasheed

  • Kudahuvadhoo Constituency President Shakir Abdul Rahman

'Will raise our voices against issues detrimental to the people'

Speaking at the session held on Wednesday, many members of the parliament and party chairman Fayyaz Ismail asserted that the MDP would raise its voice against the loss suffered by every citizen, and feel deeply about it.

“Every loss to a Maldivian citizen even if he does not belong to the MDP will be felt and called out by MDP,” Fayyaz said.

“Therefore, it is said very clearly in the contract signed by President [Mohamed] Muizzu with the people that no one will be laid off. The people of the country voted on that promise.”

Fayyaz said if they have to take to the streets to protest, he will join and give them all the necessary cooperation.

The Fenaka Corporation on Wednesday sent notices to dismiss 731 employees hired for the company's projects. More than 900 people have been laid off from the company so far.
