Pay commission said on Sunday that the pay revisions for healthcare workers will be applicable only to Maldivians employees.

Salaries of healthcare workers will be revised and implemented starting on Monday. A press conference was held at the President's Office on Sunday to reveal the details of the change.

At the press conference, Secretary General at the pay commission Mohammad Faisal said the salary hike has been brought in such a way that employees of all professions are encouraged to get their first degree as the lowest qualification.

Faisal said:

  • Allied health professionals have so far been paid salaries that are not commensurate with their work

  • Encouraging Maldivians to apply for health professions that have so far been difficult to develop is also one of the reasons for the salary change

A total of 3,710 employees will switch to the new job matrix.  These include:

  • 520 employees of regional hospitals

  • 471 staff members of atoll hospitals

  • 965 employees of health centres

  • 1,004 employees of IGMH

  • Hulhumale hospital’s 298 employees

  • Other 452 employees

Among the institutions where the salary hike will come are those working at the Centre for People with Special Needs in K. Guraidhoo. It also includes school educational counsellors and social service workers working under the Gender Ministry.

Based on the information shared by the pay commission Sunday evening, the pay hike and the payment of allowances to government employees who have not received 35% allowance so far have been given.

  • MVR 321 million to be spent between May and December this year

  • This amounts to MVR 482 million per annum

  • MVR 40 million per month

  • A total of 6,128 employees who have not received 35% allowance will start getting allowances

Healthcare workers who get night shift allowance will be given an allowance of MVR 100 per night if they work for at least four hours between 12-6am. This allowance will be available to:

  • Nurses

  • Special care nurses

  • Specialist nurses

  • Medical laboratory technologists

  • Paramedics

  • Radiological technologists

  • Health inspection professionals

  • Pharmacists

In addition, nurses, who are in charge of wards, will be given an allowance of MVR 100 per day for their work. Specialist doctors, sub-specialist doctors and dentists will be given an allowance of MVR 100 per day in cases where they are listed in the on-call duty list, which is based on the fact that they will have to work for extra hours after working on the designated official hours on that day.

Allowance to interns

The government also announced intern allowance for those who have completed their medical and dental internships. Those who complete the task and agree to serve will get:

  • An allowance of MVR 400 per day will be given to those who come out to complete their internship

  • Those who complete professional training to complete psychology licences and counselling licenses will be paid MVR 400 per day to complete training

As part of the pay disclosure drive initiated by the government, the salaries of education workers have been revised in the past.

By the time the work is completed, the government will remove the wage disparity and bring about a positive change in the salaries of all sectors of the government.

The President said that all civil servants, including the judiciary, security services and Imams, will be involved in the process of harmonising the pay.
