Home minister Imran Abdulla on Wednesday visited Maafushi prison to assess the conditions of the cell of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who has been sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of money laundering and bribery.
The Correctional Services, which oversees prisons, tweeted that Imran visited K. Maafushi prison on Wednesday. Yameen is serving his sentence at the VIP block of the prison.
In a tweet along with pictures of the visit, Corrections said Imran reviewed the progress of the new unit under construction at the prison and to assess the conditions of Yameen's cell.
On the occasion of International Workers' Day on May 1, Imran recalled the massive protest by the then opposition on May Day in 2015, led by him as well. He also called Yameen's government "tyrannical".
The opposition had criticised Imran over the issue and accused Yameen of surveilling the opposition candidate by installing cameras in the toilet of his cell.
Imran, however, denied the allegations.
