A prison officer who tried to smuggle drugs into the Asseyri Prison in K. Himmafushi has been caught red handed with the drugs and has been suspended from service.
Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed made the announcement on Twitter on Friday.
The commissioner said:
-
The officer was arrested in a joint operation with the police on the basis of a tip-off
-
The officer is currently in police custody
-
He has now been suspended from service
The commissioner, however, did not specify the exact date of his arrest.
"It is a matter of great concern that officers are involved in such activities, even if it is not common," said Ahmed Mohamed.
In addition to the Asseyri Prison, people trying to smuggle drugs and mobile phones to the main prison in K. Maafushi have also been caught in recent operations. However, even in such cases, prisons officials are arrested only on a few occasions.
