Nasheed aides apply to form The Democrats party
MPs and supporters backing Nasheed quit the ruling MDP on Wednesday, and have since announced efforts to field their candidate to the presidential election.

MDP president Mohamed Nasheed's loyalists submitted an application to the Elections Commission on Sunday to form a new political party under the name, The Democrats.
Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef submitted the application form to the commission on behalf of Nasheed's Fikuregge Dhirun breakaway faction. Elections Commission vice-president Ismail Habib received the form.
MPs and supporters backing Nasheed quit the ruling MDP on Wednesday, and have since announced efforts to form a new political party and field their candidate to the upcoming presidential election.
Speaking to reporters after submitting the application to the commission, Haasan said only Nasheed would know when he would join the party. He, however, assured that the faction would not float a party without his instructions.
He said they would be in talks with other parties to work with The Democrats for the September 9 presidential election. He reiterated that the party would field a candidate.
Pointing out that they approached the Elections Commission for permission to form The Democrats, Haasan said they will soon submission registration application with the signatures of the required 3,000 members.
