Eva is leading the formation of a new party by former top MDP officials loyal to MDP president Mohamed Nasheed.
Ruling MDP's parliamentary group on Tuesday submitted a no-confidence motion against deputy speaker Eva Abdulla, days after the Galolhu North MP quit the party and announced the formation of a new party with former top MDP officials loyal to MDP president Mohamed Nasheed.
An official from the parliament secretariat confirmed the submission, but did not provide details.
A reliable source confirmed to Atoll Times that 50 out of the 55 MDP MPs in parliament signed the motion.
MPs and supporters backing Nasheed quit the ruling MDP on Wednesday, and have since announced efforts to form a new political party and field their candidate to the upcoming presidential election. They submitted their application to the Elections Commission on Sunday to form The Democrats party.
According to the constitution:
-
Vote of two-thirds of the parliamentarians is needed to pass a no-confidence motion against the speaker or the deputy speaker
-
At least 43 MPs need to vote in favour of the motion
-
MDP has 55 MPs in the parliament
