Elections Commission on Wednesday granted the permission to form The Democrats, a new political party led by MDP president Mohamed Nasheed's loyalists.

Top officials from the movement are set to attend a meeting at the Elections Commission Wednesday afternoon. An official of the commission confirmed to the Atoll Times that permission will officially be given to The Democrats at the meeting to formalise the party.
The movement will now be required to gather at least 3,000 members and file an application at the Elections Commission for registration.
MPs and supporters backing Nasheed quit the ruling MDP last week, and announced efforts to form a new political party and field their candidate to the upcoming presidential election.
