Road Development Corporation (RDC) has said that the delay in the reconstruction of Ameenee Magu is due to challenges from handling the existing utility cables underground.

There have been complaints from the public about the delay in the construction of Ameenee Magu. The road is being blocked by sections to carry out the work, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and drivers.

Ameenee Magu is now closed from STELCO to Odagella Cafe for construction.

When asked about the delay in the pace of road construction, RDC spokesperson Ahmed Fairooz told Atoll Times on Wednesday that there will be no delay in any works except the asphalt paving of the road.

"There are a lot of problems in digging because of the way the ground is. Due to the disarray of electric cables and wires, sometimes we have to dig with our hands instead of using a spade," he said.

Highlighting the problems in road construction, Fairooz said that power cables have been damaged on several occasions in the past during the work.

He added:

  • The work of digging in the now closed segment has been completed; levelling the floor is now underway

  • Asphalt paving of the segment is likely to begin on Thursday

RDC Managing Director Moosa Ali Manik said in a programme on Raajje TV on Tuesday that the way Ameenee Magu is poses a lot of challenges in developing the road. STELCO cables, Ooredoo and Dhiraagu network cables have been installed, he said, adding that the pipelines that were earlier installed to build the road is in disarray.

"The previous governments, because of how difficult and burdensome the project is, has avoided touching this road. We can see the mess that has been made at that time," Moosa said of the pipes that were installed earlier to construct the road.

"But now we're working in such a way that we don't have to do any more paving again".

Ameenee Magu is being developed under the Male Street Scaping Project, which has been handed over to the RDC. As part of the Ameenee Magu development project:

  • The work was awarded for MVR 84.4 million

  • The work was awarded to RDC by the planning ministry on July 3 to be completed within 210 days has been delayed and the current date is September

  • Work on the fifth segment is currently underway; it ranges from Koimala Hingun to Gaakoshi Flats

  • Part of the road has been temporarily opened with paving done from near Dharubaaruge to STELCO

  • Plans are afoot to open the fifth section as soon as possible after completing paving
