A motion was submitted to two parliamentary committees on Wednesday as an Indian company which has been contracted and paid 15% of the contract value in advance failed to develop police stations in 61 islands.

Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaz referred the matter to the parliament's public finance committee and the government oversight committee.

Riyaz said home minister Imran Abdulla had made irresponsible statements regarding the project.

Riyaz's letter said that the government had paid 15% to the project contractor, India's ABL Indira Projects JV, but even days after the payment, the work on the project has not been seen yet as the Exim Bank of India has not been able to provide funds for the project.

Riyaz has sought a probe into the alleged irregularities in the planning of the project and the manner in which the government has spent money on the project.

He said that:

  • The minister revealed that 15% of contract value had been paid to the contractor as well as the date of commencement and completion of the project

  • From the information given by the minister in March last year, it is clear that funds have been allocated for the project

  • This raises questions about the project and suggests that rules and regulations have been violated at the state's expense
