2 suspects in MP Zareer attack remanded to another 15 days

They were produced before the court after the expiry of the deadline and was given another 15 days, police said on Saturday.

Two persons arrested in connection with the attack on MDP MP Hassan Zareer have been remanded in police custody for 15 more days.

A group of five attacked Zareer while he was in a cafe in Male along with a group of friends in the early hours of May 1. He was hit on the head with a hammer, police said.

Zareer had earlier told Atoll Times that the police had informed him that all the five of his attackers had been identified.

However, only three people have been arrested so far in connection with the attack. They are:

  • Two local men, aged 21 and 22, who were arrested on May 11

  • Ibrahim Abdulla, who surrendered to the police on Tuesday after the police launched a manhunt for him, accusing him of attempted murder; he has since been remanded in police custody for a month

The first two arrested in the case were initially remanded in police custody for 15 days. They were produced before the Criminal Court on Saturday after the expiry of the initial remand period, and was given another 15 days, police said.

In attacking Zareer:

  • A hammer and a sharp object were used 

  • He was attacked directly in the head

  • Tests conducted in hospital did not show any significant internal damage to Zareer.
