Government has begun firing political appointees who have signed up to The Democrats, a new party led by MDP president Mohamed Nasheed.
Some former MDP members who joined The Democrats have shared on social media their termination letters issued by the President's Office. The government also confirms that they have started removing them from their posts.
Presidential spokesperson Miuvan Mohamed told Atoll Times on Sunday that they had been appointed to the posts in MDP slots.
"They are no longer members of MDP. They were terminated as MDP had asked for it," he said.
It was not immediately clear how many people were dismissed.
On Wednesday, the Elections Commission approved the formation of The Democrats. The process of completing the 3,000 members required to form the party is underway.
The party, which has announced that it will contest the September 9 presidential, will have to complete the registration processes before filing of nominations open in July.
