Maurouf Jameel, Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), has announced that he will retire from the role but continue to work with the corporation in an advisory capacity.

Mauroof, who was involved in the formation of HDC and was re-appointed as its chief executive officer in December, recently informed staff of his decision to retire. In an interview on PSM’s Raajje Miadhu programme on Tuesday, he stated that he believed this was the appropriate time to step down.

According to Mauroof:

  • He resumed leadership of HDC at the request of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

  • At the time of his appointment, he was semi-retired and had not intended to serve for an extended period.

  • His decision to accept the position was due to his long involvement and interest in the housing and infrastructure development sector.

  • He anticipated the role would be challenging due to his age and the demands of the position.

Addressing speculation about political pressure, Mauroof said there was no pressure to step down, apart from the demands of the job itself. He noted that President Muizzu had extended full support and trust, facilitating all required decisions during his tenure.

Mauroof said he has been considering organisational changes to benefit the corporation and believes this is the right time to retire, as several key projects are either completed or nearing completion. However, he clarified that his intention is not to fully step away from the corporation and that he plans to remain in an advisory role better suited to his current circumstances.

He stated: “One of the reasons I accepted the role was because I believed in the significance of the reform efforts proposed by the President. My intention is to continue in an advisory capacity, not to leave HDC entirely.”

Mauroof previously served as Director General of the Hulhumalé Development Unit prior to the establishment of HDC and has also held the position of Minister of Construction and Public Infrastructure. In addition to his roles at HDC and HDFC, he is currently involved in initiatives related to architectural heritage.
