EC signs agreement with 5 institutions for election support

Speaking on the occasion, the EC said these agreements would greatly ease the functioning of the commission.

The Elections Commission (EC) on Tuesday signed Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) with institutions related to this year's presidential election.

The MoUs were signed  at a ceremony held at Dharubaaruge, which houses the election headquarters.

The five institutions were represented by:

  • President of Civil Service Commission (CSC) Mohamed Nasih

  • Commissioner Mohamed Hameed on behalf of Maldives Police Service

  • Deputy minister Aishath Rashida on behalf of the Department of National Registration (DNR)

  • Adam Mohamed, Managing Director of Maldives Post

  • Local Government Authority (LGA) Director General Shamoon Adam 

Speaking on the occasion, the EC said the agreements would greatly ease the functioning of the commission.

The areas where these agencies can help include:

  • Police - for transportation and security

  • CSC - To hire civil servants for work

  • DNR - Compilation of register of eligible voters

  • Maldives Post – Sending ballot boxes to islands

  • LGA - Seeking election support through councils

Nominations for the September 9 election will open on July 23.

Polling will be held in eight countries, but only in countries where at least 150 register to vote.

So far, the candidates who have announced their candidacy include:

  • MDP's presidential candidate, interim President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih 

  • Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the opposition party's presidential candidate, who has been hindered from contesting the elections due to a criminal court conviction

  • MNP presidential candidate, former defence minister Mohamed Nazim

  • Jumhooree Party's presidential candidate, party leader and MP from Maamigili constituency, Gasim Ibrahim

  • Former home minister Umar Naseer (Independent)

  • Former Attorney General Dr. Mohammad Munawwar (Independent)

  • A candidate from The Democrats, the new party founded by parliament speaker and MDP president Mohamed Nasheed
