Police on Friday denied claims that a young man who was riding a motorcycle that hit a Maldives National University (MNU) lecturer on Wednesday fled the scene after the accident.
Ali Hafeez, 50, was hit by the speeding motorcycle as he was leaving the mosque after his morning prayer. Hafeez sustained serious injuries in the accident and is still being treated at ADK on ventilator support.
A video of the scene after the accident has been circulating on social media. It first shows Hafeez being carried away. A motorcycle was found lying on the road a short distance from the accident.
A young man is then seengetting on a GN motorcycle. Two other young men get on his motorcycle and the three of them ride off from the area.
Many people thought the young man had fled the scene.
However, police said the 22-year-old had gone to the hospital on the motorcycle.
"He also sustained injuries in the accident. However, he was discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment," a police official said on Friday.
Police have come under fire for releasing the young man, who did not have a driving licence, after the accident. Several of Hafeez's relatives and friends have launched a campaign on social media demanding justice for the man who is fighting for his life.
Police have not yet arrested the young man who drove the motorcycle. However, the case is being investigated, police said.
