Regardless of what The Democrats say, the opposition PPM-PNC will only stop its India Out campaign activities at the direct behest of its presidential candidate, Abdulla Yameen, the party declared on Monday.

The Democrats have started to work with the PPM to defeat the government, and the two parties are holding consultative meetings. However, during the Eid celebrations on Wednesday, PPM supporters wore face masks depicting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made caricatures of him, and protested using the India Out slogan.

The Democrats founder Hassan Latheef said on Sunday they will not work with any party that carries movements like India Out. However, The Democrats held a meeting with the PPM-PNC on Sunday as well.

The PPM-PNC coalition has no intention of stopping the India Out movement because of the Democrats' stand, PNC President Abdul Raheem Abdulla, who is the interim leader of the coalition, told reporters on Monday.

He was responding to a question from Atoll Times during the door-to-door presidential campaign of the PPM-PNC coalition on Monday.

“Whether it is India Out or anything else, if we stop it, we will stop it after consultation with our president, in accordance with the advice and guidance of our president,” he said.

"They [The Democrats] saying something different is not a reason to stop a movement we are running at all."

Abdul Raheem added that they are not in discussions with the Democrats about forming a coalition for the presidential election, but are working with them on national issues and issues that threaten Maldives' independence.

“President Yameen is in jail and he is advising us to work with those who are working with us on the major issues in the country," he said.

Despite Hassan Latheef clarifying The Democrats views on India Out, former STO managing director Hussain Amr refused to give a direct answer to the question at another press conference after PPM and the party’s talks on Sunday, and instead alleged journalists as having been bribed by the government.
