Regional Airports Company Ltd (RACL) on Wednesday launched a special institute (Fire Training Academy) to train firefighters in the field of aviation, housing the first fire training simulator in the country at North Haa Alif atoll Hoarafushi airport.
According to RACL, the fire training simulator’s setup was managed by the recently deceased Fire and Safety Director of RACL Ahmed Fayaz, who had commenced work on the project in August 2021. To honour his dedication to the cause, and Line-of-Duty death, RACL has named the automatic fire simulator after him; Ahmed Fayaz Fire Simulator.
The 40 courses, to be conducted by 20 competent instructors accepted by the Institute of Civil Aviation Authority have been approved for the training programmes. The academy’s main objective is to develop competent individuals to serve as first responders in emergency incidents and train their staff to be proficient in all areas relative to aviation.
Apart from fire fighting, this institute will also be training individuals in aerodrome operations; specialising in better management of all airport resources, improving predictability during regular and irregular operations in order to foster improved decision-making.
The fire simulator is designed to aid the trainees in determining fire spreading speed, area, conduction and radiation rates. In July 2022, the academy commenced their first Basic Firefighter Training with 23 recruits. They are ready to begin soon, several first responder courses for those interested to work in the emergency fields of aviation and firefighting.
