Hayashi's visit to Maldives is the first by a Japanese government official of that level since then Foreign Minister Taro Kono visited Maldives in 2018.

Japanese foreign minister Yoshimasa Hayashi arrived in Maldives on Saturday at the invitation of Maldivian foreign minister Abdulla Shahid.
Hayashi arrived in Maldives at 8:45 pm on a two-day official visit. Hayashi was welcomed at the Velana International Airport by state foreign minister Ahmed Khaleel.
The foreign ministry said:

Shahid will meet his Japanese counterpart and hold official talks

He will also meet defence minister Mariya Ahmed Didi
-
Documents related to a scholarship programme for human resource development will be exchanged between the two countries
-
An agreement to exempt visa requirements for diplomatic and official passports for a period of 90 days will be signed

He will visit Kalaafaanu School which was built under the assistance of the Japanese government
Hayashi's visit to Maldives is the first by a Japanese government official of that level since then foreign minister Taro Kono visited Maldives in 2018.
Shahid also met Hayashi during his visit to Japan last May.
