Hassan Mamdooh, a minority shareholder of Hanbo Maldives which is building K-Park flats in Hulhumale, was released from custody on Sunday after he agreed to hand over his passport to Immigration, the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office said on Monday.

Mamdooh was arrested on July 5 under an order of the Hulhumale court while trying to leave the country after the Criminal Court ordered the release of his passport. Subsequently, his remand was extended by the Hulhumale court. However, the court on Sunday released him under conditions.

When Atoll Times asked the PG Office on Monday whether it would appeal against the order to release Mamdooh, its spokesperson and Public Prosecutor Ahmed Shafeeu said it would not.

“He has agreed to hand over his passport to Immigration until the High Court case is concluded,” Shafeeu said.

The prosecutor's office has already appealed the Criminal Court's order to release Mamdooh's passport.

Mamdooh was ordered to be released, according to Shafiu, with additional conditions. They are:

  • If he goes out of the city, to notify the court in writing

  • He can go outside the city with police permission

Shafeeu said that with those conditions, the police can now continue the investigation.

The case of the Maldivian shareholder Mamdooh using Hanbo Maldives to sell K-Park flats at a cheap price came to light in late April last year. The company said in a statement that a criminal investigation has been launched into the matter.

  • Hanbo Maldives alleged that Mamdooh and another person had extorted money from many people

  • Hanbo said the signature of Managing Director Jin Shi Hu, who owns 95% of the company, was forged
