Tidal surges flood Male, airport highway

The meteorological service (MET) has issued a white alert from Kaafu atoll, down south to Addu.

Major waves hit the Male area Saturday afternoon, flooding parts of the surf point in Henveiru ward of Male and the Sinamale bridge highway.

Tidal surges have been observed in Male, Hulhule, Hulhumale and Male-Hulhumale highway since 2pm.

A video of motorcycles and people being washed away with the waves on the highway has been posted on social media.

In addition, videos have been released showing dustbins drifting away in the artificial beach area.

Huge rocks can be seen flowing on the road along with the waves crashing on the Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Male. The water flow is so strong that cyclists are thrown over and washed away, causing injury to some, and damage to vehicles.

Police have advised drivers and riders to be careful as tidal surges are expected for hours.

The meteorological service (MET) has issued a white alert from Kaafu atoll, down south to Addu. Wave height is expected to be between 2 and 5 feet above sea level.
