Opposition PPM-PNC presidential candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz said on Wednesday that his government will desginate the last 10 days of Ramadan a public holiday.
Muizz made the remarks while speaking at a rally held in B. Eydhafushi on Wednesday evening, campaigning for the September 9 presidential election.
"In our government, I intend to declare the last 10 days of Ramadan as public holidays altogether," he said.
Muizz said the decision will allow people to spend a lot of time in night worship. It will also make it easier for government employees to go for Umrah without taking many leave days, he said.
In addition, school students will also get relief in the last 10, he said. They include:
-
Grades eight and below will be closed
-
Since grade eight and above have examinations to assess learning, students above the grade may attend school as prescribed
Muizz, who is also the Mayor of the city, mentioned how he and the council had decorated Male city streets during the Eid holidays. The digital lights installed on the streets made the sound of Takbeer heard, and it was well received by the people, he said.
"Why was that? That is because, in our hearts, the bright light of Islam shines. So, people who feel that should be in power," he said.
