President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has proposed to add two lanes to the Sinamale Bridge to address the congestion on the bridge.
The MDP and its allies Adhaalath Party and MDA held their 'Ufaaveri Male' rally at Carnival area on Friday night. They announced many measures to reduce congestion and road safety to make Male a breathable place.
Some of the key elements of President Solih's 'Ufaaveri Male' manifesto are:
-
Bridge connection from Hulhumale to Giravaru and introduction of light rail service in the region
-
Develop pedestrian paths
-
Special bus for school children
-
A modern public transport system
-
Develop a plan to reduce old vehicles
-
Set a vehicle cap to reduce the number of vehicles in the city
-
Neighbourhood parking for bicycles with parking facility for four wheelers
The Sinamale Bridge is the largest infrastructure development project implemented ever in Maldives, done by the government of former President Abdulla Yameen. The project, which began in 2015, was completed in September 2018. The project cost a total of USD 210 million, two-thirds of which came as grant aid from China, and the balance as Chinese loans.
The bridge now has four lanes, two lanes per side. Therefore, the bridge is congested during rush hour.
