Heroin worth MVR 12 million seized from luggage

Customs said on Wednesday that drugs seized weighed 10 kilos and was tested positive for heroine.

Customs has seized a large quantity of drugs from the luggage of a Pakistani national who arrived in the Maldives by air.

The drugs were seized from the luggage of the 48-year-old man who arrived in the Maldives from Dubai last Saturday.

Customs said on Wednesday that drugs seized weighed 10 kilos and was tested positive for heroine. Their street value exceeds MVR 12 million, it added.

The man and the drugs seized have now been handed over to the police.

Meanwhile, Criminal Court has ordered the detention of Azharuddin for 45 days. The court order stated:

  • He said that the luggage from which drugs seized did not belong to him

  • Witnesses noted that drugs were found in the language that he was carrying when he arrived in the Maldives

  • Sufficient evidence has been presented for the drug trafficking charges against him
