The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation into some of the announcements made by the MDP presidential candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, close to the presidential election.

President Solih and PNC-PPM presidential candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz are making many campaign promises for the second round of the presidential election to be held on coming Saturday. The president, who is campaigning for a second term, has decided to raise salaries and waive some fines.

The ACC on Tuesday said it has received 61 election-related complaints to date:

  • Four cases filed through the National Complaints Bureau of the Elections Commission

  • 26 cases filed by individuals

  • 28 cases filed anonymously

The commission said 29 cases have been registered and investigations have been launched so far. The ACC has decided to investigate cases of election bribery and the use of various state resources to influence the elections. Some of the cases include:

  • Abolishing the garage city and charging a fee of MVR 10,000 for taxi registration

  • Increasing old age pension to MVR 7,000

  • Waiving of interest charged on Covid loans issued to small businesses

  • Decision to pay an allowance to principals working outside their own island

  • Decision to pay step allowance to judicial employees

  • Various issues related to the Binnveriya scheme

The ACC said it is looking into the complaints and taking steps to investigate the cases.
