The responsibilities of Male mayorship have been handed over to Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh following mayor Dr Mohamed Muizzu's victory in presidential runoff on Saturday.

Muizzu, who presided over the first city council meeting on Wednesday since being elected president, said he will remain in office until November 17, but that his responsibilities will be exercised by the deputy mayor.

Muizzu's seat will become vacant with his swearing-in on November 17.

According to the Decentralisation Act:

  • If the post of mayor becomes vacant under any circumstances, the deputy mayor will temporarily assume the responsibilities

  • The Local Government Authority (LGA) must notify the Elections Commission (EC) within 14 days of the vacancy of a council member and a by-election must be held within 60 days of the notice

  • The term of a person so elected shall be the remainder of the term of the entire council

Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof has expressed interest in running for the post of mayor of the capital city.
