President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu will be sworn in as president at the Republic Square on November 17, his spokesperson Mohamed Firzul Abdulla Haleel said on Monday.

At a press conference held at the president-elect's office, Firzul said the parliament make the arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony as requested by the president-elect.

Firzul said November 17 falls on a Friday and president-elect Muizzu wants to hold the swearing-in ceremony at Republic Square that evening.

"So far, discussions have been held to hold the ceremony at Republic Square as the president-elect has indicated earlier. The time discussed now is early evening on Friday, November 17," he said.

He said some changes are possible depending on the weather.

Preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony of the president-elect.

Opposition PPM-PNC candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz, who advocates for stronger ties with China, defeated incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, known for his pro-India stance, in the second round of the presidential election held on September 30.

President Solih, who suffered a major defeat in the election, was sworn in as president in on November 17, 2018, following delays in the 2013 presidential election that had been annulled several times by the court. However, the president has said that, like previous presidents, he will ensure that his successors can be sworn in on November 11, the customary swearing date of presidents.
