MP Jeehan elected IPU's democracy and rights committee

Jihan was elected to the IPU's Democracy and Human Rights Committee in 2021.

Hinnavaru MP Jeehan Mahmood was elected as the chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Democracy and Human Rights Committee on Wednesday.

Jeehan, who also chairs the human rights and gender committee of the parliament, has been elected as the chairperson of the IPU committee.

Jihan was elected to the IPU's Democracy and Human Rights Committee in 2021. Jeehan, who was elected to the committee from the Asia Pacific Group, is the first member of the Maldivian legislature to be elected to the committee.

The committee examines current and developing challenges to democracy and human rights. It proposes parliamentary action on these at both national and international level through the political resolutions it sets out once a year, and which are adopted by the entire IPU membership.
