Nominations for police chief open

The deadline for submitting letters of interest is 12 noon on the 19th of this month. The document must be submitted to the Home Ministry.

Nominations for the vacant post of Police Commissioner open from Thursday.

The post of Police Commissioner became vacant after the resignation of Mohammed Hameed, who was the Police Commissioner in the previous government.

Assistant Commissioner Farhad Fikry has been temporarily entrusted with the management of the police.

The opposition MDP has also criticized the government for not appointing a person to the post of police commissioner.

According to the current Police Act, the post of Commissioner must be filled from within the police. And it has to be announced as well.

The announcement said that the opportunity is open for those who are interested in applying for the post of Commissioner from the rank of Assistant Commissioner to higher ranks.

The deadline for submitting letters of interest is 12 noon on the 19th of this month. The document must be submitted to the Home Ministry.

According to the Maldivian Police Service Act, the President does not have the direct power to appoint a person to the post of Police Commissioner. The law states;

  • The position is open to the public, 90 days

  • Must be in the position of Assistant Commissioner

  • Applicants will be interviewed by the Police Board and assessed for their abilities

  • The National Integrity Commission and the Police Professional Standards Command will make a report on them

  • The report shall include the proportion of reputable persons who are eligible for appointment as a commissioner and if there is any reason why the commissioner should not be appointed

  • The President shall appoint a person to the post of Commissioner on the advice of the Minister in charge of Police Affairs after considering the names proposed by the Police Board
