Opposition MDP Parliamentary Group (PG) members, who have a majority in the parliament, are considering disapproving some of President Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet appointment. However, the PG has not yet made a decision on the matter.
President Muizzu, who was sworn in on 17th last month, appointed 22 ministers to his cabinet.
The parliamentary government oversight committee, which examined the names of the ministers, decided on Tuesday that all the ministers met the requirements. However, the committee decided to ask each minister to be voted separately in the vote to approve them.
The approval of ministers is expected to be scheduled for Monday's final sitting of the year. The MDP PG has not yet taken any official decision on the vote on the approval of the ministers.
It is learned that the MDP PG meeting to be held Monday will determine the ministers to be approved and the ministers not to be approved.
"So far, when we spoke informally among the members, there were very mixed opinions. All the ministers may not be approved. Some are saying that they will not approve any minister," a member of the 55-member MDP PG told Atoll Times.
Another member said the main concerns were whether housing minister Dr Ali Haider would be approved after some of the statements made by him regarding the land allotted to the residents of Male by the previous government.
In addition, some members have the spirit to approve some ministers based on the political benefits of MDP. They include:
-
Tourism minister Ibrahim Faisal, who is the most criticised member of the president's cabinet, has the approval of many MDP members
-
Faisal is the son of President Muizzu's advisor and chairman of the main ruling PNC, Abdul Raheem Abdulla
President Muizzu has previously said that he has appointed a capable and productive cabinet.
