Gasim says to contest Maamigili seat for fourth term

From 28 May 2009 to date, he has served as a member of parliament for three terms or more than 14 consecutive years

Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim said on Wednesday that he would contest the upcoming parliamentary election as well. 

He made the remarks in response to questions from journalists outside the President's Office after his meeting with President Mohamed Muizzu. 

Asked if he would contest next year's parliamentary elections, Gasim said, "I will contest". The Jumhooree Party (JP) leader said he will contest the Mamigili constituency.

According to the Elections Commission, JP has more than 22,000 members as of February. However, in the last presidential election, Gasim received only 5,460 votes.

  • Gasim, who has contested the presidential race three times, first held a parliamentary seat in 1990

  • He also served as the speaker of the special assembly that drafted the current constitution

  • From 28 May 2009 to date, he has served as a member of parliament for three terms or more than 14 consecutive years

  • He has always represented his own constituency in parliament

Parliamentary elections will be held in early 2024.
