Warning over stormy weather, rough seas

"The rain is not expected to lighten up so soon", MET told Atoll Times.

The Maldives Meteorological service (MET) has advised seafarers to exercise caution as the western monsoon is expected to continue in the coming days. Heavy rains are expected in the central and southern parts of the country.

These days, it’s raining in different parts of the country. According to the records released by the MET Office on Saturday, the heaviest rainfall was recorded in S. Hithadhoo, persisting from Friday till 8 am on Saturday.

The weather forecast for the coming days is expected to be showery in the coming days. Heavy rain is expected in some places.

"The rain is not expected to lighten up so soon. The coming week will be rainy in the central and southern parts of the country. Rain is expected to continue in the coming days, with heavy rain in different parts of the country," the Met Office told Atoll Times on Saturday.

The MET also forecasts seas to be rough and winds to be strong.

According to the MET Office:

  • Winds will be between 13 and 23 mph in the north central atolls

  • Southwest and northwest winds between 5 and 15 mph

  • Wind speed can pick up to 35 mph

  • Seas will be rough all areas of the country during storm

  • Wave heights will be between 3 and 6 feet in the north central region

  • Wave heights in the south will be 2 feet and 5 feet

Maldives usually receives heavy rains in the western monsoon, this time of year. The weather is generally good for most days in the north-east monsoon though there is some rain in the sunny season as well. The western monsoon usually hits Maldives from mid-May till November. The sunny season lasts from January to March. December and April are usually the times when the two seasons change, so causes some bad weather.
