The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) said on Monday that the weather experienced in Maldives now is stormy because it is the inter-monsoonal period, which is the season between two monsoons.

The first constellation of the western monsoon, Assidha started early in April, but it was very hot at the time due to the El-Nino weather pattern. However, it has been raining perpetually in various parts of the country recently. The Met Office said the rainfall on Sunday and Monday will ease up on Tuesday, but the weather will then intensify again.

"This is an inter-monsoonal rainfall period, and the weather will be like this. It will be usually heavy during this period," a Met official said.

Inter-monsoon weather will be experienced twice in Maldives:

  • The rainfall in December when the western monsoon changes to the northern monsoon

  • Now we are experiencing the rainfall when the north-east monsoon ends and changes to the western monsoon, this period usually falls in April

"The transition period is expected to last until the first two weeks of May. The exact date of stabilisation in the western monsoon will be announced within those two weeks," the official said.

He said the seas would not be rough during this rainy patch except for when the wind picks up.

Monday's weather reports:

  • A white alert has been issued for rain covering the whole country

  • Thunderstorms will accompany heavy rain

  • Wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour
