President Mohamed Muizzu said on Monday that the leaders should fear Allah and fulfil their responsibilities honestly in the new year. The President also called on the people to obey the leaders while calling on leader to show mercy to the people.

The President made the call in his address to the people of Maldives on the occasion of the beginning of the New Year.

Throughout the address, the President focused on the people and the government working together to achieve progress for the country. The sermon also emphasised on maintaining unity for development.

"I think development should start from the bottom up. Development ideas should be born in the minds of the people. It should be the duty of those who are entrusted with the responsibility to fulfil their tasks with fear of Allah, honesty and loyalty," he said.

The President said the past year was a year in which the people made very important decisions and drew very colorful visions. The President said:

  • They decided that there should be no foreign military power in Maldives

  • They decided that they needed the same progress, civilisation and development as other countries in the world

  • They agreed that generations should be shaped with Islamic and Maldivian national characteristics

  • At the same time, the people prepared for the most modern housing and settlement in terms of structure

"A new government was elected to make these decisions a reality. The dreams of the people for the New Year are based on these hopes and visions”, Muizzu, who won the presidential election in September last year and was sworn in as Maldives's eighth president on November 17, said.

The President then spoke of the importance of friendship and unity. He stressed the importance of these for development.

"A traditional Maldivian fishing boat is held together by planks planted on both sides of it. Similarly, the development of a country involves this strong relationship between the two sides," he said.

"It is the people and the rulers. The rulers must be compassionate to the people. They must honour their promises. The people must obey the rulers. They must cooperate. This is the foundation and the cornerstone of a country's development."

The President’s address added:

  • The last weeks of last year and the first weeks of this year have been a very special season of development;

  • Many of the promises of the first 100 days of this government are being fulfilled on time

The President concluded his address by praying that God would "save our tongues and hands from making false words and spreading false information”.

"May you have the good fortune to live with a pure heart. May this beloved country be forever free”.
