The ruling PPM-PNC on Sunday moved a no-confidence motion in the speaker and deputy speaker of the parliament.

Twenty-three MPs signed no-confidence motions against the two members of the main opposition MDP.

The no-confidence motions against Aslam, who represents Hithadhoo North constituency, and Saleem, who represents Hoarafushi constituency, were submitted in connection with the decision of the opposition MDP and Democrats not to approve some cabinet appointments made by President Mohamed Muizzu, who took office in November.

The no-confidence motion in Aslam states:

  • The government oversight committee meeting held on December 10 unanimously decided to recommend the approval of all members of the cabinet

  • Although Rule 200(b) of the rules of procedure of the parliament stipulates that the matter should be tabled as soon as possible with the report, the matter was tabled on December 18, eight days after receipt of the report

  • The report was sent back to the committee without an opportunity for debate or a vote on the matter

The motion also said that Aslam acted in violation of the rules of procedure of the parliament as well as Articles 70 and 75 of the constitution.

The no-confidence motion against the deputy speaker said he had been complicit in the speaker's actions that violated the rules of procedure of the parliament and the constitution.

The main opposition parties MDP and the Democrats had announced their intention to reject four members appointed to the cabinet by incumbent president Dr. Mohamed Muizzu including the new Attorney General.

The 22 members were up for a vote at 1.30pm but ruling party lawmakers had locked themselves inside the parliament chamber in an attempt to block the vote.
