The salaries of the administrative staff of the Parliament have been increased.

At a staff night held on Friday evening to felicitate the parliament staff for the first time in 12 years, parliament speaker Mohammed Aslam said that one of the main concerns of the administrative staff of the parliament was the halt in salary increments.

Aslam said the basic salary of the parliamentary administrative staff has been increased by 20% since last month as approved by the Parliamentary General Committee and the Finance Committee.

When the General Committee reviewed the Budget 2024, it found that it had been 11 years since the parliament staff last received a salary increment. At the time, Secretary General Fathimath Niusha had said that the parliament had decided to increase allowances instead of increasing the basic salaries of the employees.

The 2024 budget approved in December included a budget of MVR 11.1 million for parliamentary office expenses.

For the salaries of the staff in the administrative budget of the Parliament:

  • A special allowance of 20% of basic salary has been provided for parliamentary service employees

  • An annual insurance premium of MVR 3,500 will be paid to parliamentary officers and parliamentary service personnel working in parliament

  • MVR 508,200 has been included in this year’s budget for higher education allowance
