Chinese ambassador to the Maldives Wang Li Jin said on Saturday that the Maldives has been able to transform its socio-economic landscape through Chinese assistance by accelerating the pace of economic and social development in the country.

Speaking at a ceremony held at Dharubaaruge to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the 73rd anniversary of the founding of China, Li Jin highlighted China's significant contributions. These include:

  • Sinamale bridge

  • 11,000 housing units in Male and Hulhumale

  • Development of Velana International Airport

Li Jin said the Maldives-China relations have been growing at a good pace in recent years under the leadership of the leaders of the two countries. Behind this, she said, was the willingness to work together on matters of mutual interest.

Most importantly, Li Jin said, the basis of the relationship was the 'One-China' policy.

This is China's position that Taiwan is part of China. Maldives has been supporting the policy since the inception of Maldives-China relations. This was also highlighted in Li Jin's speech and it was noted with thanks.

Talking about the future, Li Jin said:

  • We need to start a new chapter in this relationship by strengthening our wider relationships

  • China is ready to do more work together and help take bilateral relations to new heights

"China and the Maldives begin this journey on a connected path with hope, prosperity and happiness," the ambassador said.
