Speaker of the Parliament and Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem has said that there would be room for different views, alternative ideas and perspectives in the parliamentary debates, statements and work, but it should be done in such a way that the discipline, decorum and dignity of Parliament is not violated.
Abdul Raheem said this after taking over as the new Speaker of Parliament.
Abdul Raheem said the work of parliament should be done within the rules and ethical standards.
“While we are focused on solving the problems facing the country, we must also work to improve the internal environment of the parliament, its work, staff and administrative services,” he said.
Abdul Raheem added:
-
The rules of democracy and the opinion of the people will be welcomed
-
From the moment the matter is submitted to Parliament, he will work on studying and fixing the problems until the matter or the bill is resolved
-
Time should be given to improve and revive the relationship between this parliament and foreign parliaments and associations
“I assure the honourable members and staff of Parliament that I will give my full share, attention and time to all these matters,” Abdul Raheem said.
The ruling PNC has 75 members out of 93 strong parliament.
-
With the JP, MDA and MNP seats, the number of pro-government members will rise to 79
-
This would give the government a supermajority; a figure which gives the government the power to amend the constitution
-
There are 2 independent members and 12 opposition MDP members
