Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdullah has said that as soon as the government is ready, parliament will start holding extraordinary sessions.

Abdul Raheem said this while speaking at a press conference held at the PNC office on Wednesday.

Parliament is currently on leave after completing its second term this year. The session ended and went on leave after a week-long extension. According to the rules of the Parliament, the term of the Parliament is divided into three parts.

  • First Term - 1 February to 15 May

  • Second term - 1 June to 15 August

  • Third Term - 1 October to the end of November

Speaking at the PNC press conference, Abdul Raheem said even though the parliament was on vacation the members were ready to hold an extraordinary session.

“Even if the parliament is on vacation, the parliament is ready to hold extraordinary sessions if something important happens,” he said.

The National Bank, BML, had banned making overseas transactions on debit cards and new credit cards issued to BML Rufiyaa accounts on Tuesday, but the decision was reversed in the evening of the same day. The decision was changed after the central bank, MMA, had hopped on board to assist BML in raising foreign exchange.

Following this incident, police have launched an investigation into the case, saying there is room to believe that there was an attempt to change the government in the chaos that surrounded it.
