New parliament to begin sittings next week

On Tuesday it was decided to continue parliament work in accordance with the rules of the 19th Parliament until the rules of the new Parliament are formulated.

The 20th Parliament, which was sworn in on Tuesday, will hold its next session on Monday, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Ahmed Nazim, said at the closing of Tuesday’s parliament session.

After the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, the Parliament continued its session in the afternoon with Deputy Speaker Nazim chairing it.

Nazim said the constitution provides for the rules and regulations of the parliament and the work of the parliament cannot be suspended until the new parliament can determine the rules.

The following motions were proposed by Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah, and passed at Tuesday’s parliamentary session:

  • To continue working in accordance with the rules of the 19th Parliament until the rules of procedure of the new Parliament are formulated

  • The General Committee will be entrusted with the task of drafting the rules of the new Parliament and submit them to the Parliament by the 26th of next month

Decisions on the formation of parliamentary committees were also taken on Tuesday. Accordingly:

  • The number of members of the standing committees of the Parliament, except the 241 committees of the Constitution or the Committee on Security Services, as defined in the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, is 11; 241 Committee will have 13 members

  • Political parties and non-partisan members of Parliament should send the names of the members they want to be appointed to the standing committees of Parliament by the 2nd of next month

“If things go accordingly, we will hold our next meeting on June 3, 2024 at 9 am,” Nazim said.
