A foreigner fishing for groupers near Alifu Dhaalu Dhangethi was hit by a speedboat and killed on Saturday.
Police received a report of the incident at 7:55 am on Saturday, and the man was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Dhangethi Health Centre.
"...the captain of the speedboat has been arrested. He is a Maldivian man," police said.
Dhangethi councillor Imran Ahmed said the Bangladeshi was a crew on a grouper fishing boat that went fishing in the area. He was hit by a ferry boat that was travelling from Maamigili to Male, he said.
"On the northern side of this island, near Ranveli, where a resort once operated, the shallow lagoon site is located in the middle of the sea channel there. Even if we call it a ‘thila’ [shallow lagoon area], boats can be driven right across," Imran said.
Imran said the fishing boat was nearby at the time of the accident and the flag to indicate fishing activity in the area had also been hoisted.
