The foreign ministers of Maldives and Sri Lanka on Wednesday discussed the strengthening of economic and trade relations, including the cessation of illegal fishing in the Special Economic Zones (SEZ).

In a joint statement issued after an official meeting with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry as part of his current visit to Sri Lanka, Minister Zameer highlighted the key issues discussed by the two countries during the visit.

Zameer said Sri Lanka and Maldives have a long-standing close relationship and Sri Lanka has provided assistance in Maldivian development and progress. As such, he listed:

  • Sri Lanka helps Maldives to develop education, trade and health sectors

  • Many Sri Lankans live in Maldives

  • They contribute to the economy

Regarding his discussions on curbing illegal fishing in the territory of Sri Lanka and Maldives, the minister said the two ministers discussed ways to curb illegal fishing as the economies of both countries depend heavily on fisheries.

"Discussions were held on looking after our EEZ and stopping illegal fishermen in the area. In addition, we have expressed Maldivian fishermen's readiness to provide information on sustainable pole and line fishing," he said.

During the official meeting with the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, Zameer also discussed further cooperation between the two countries in the fields of trade and investment.

"I hope the agreements on prevention of double taxation and protection and safeguarding of investments will be concluded as soon as possible. These will further strengthen bilateral trade relations and remove burdens in the field," he said.

In addition, Zameer also briefed the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister on the decision of President Muizzu to sign an agreement with Sri Lanka to work together to prevent criminal offences.

In his speech, the Minister thanked the Sri Lankan government for facilitating visa requirements for students while a large number of Maldivians are living in Sri Lanka for various purposes.

In addition, the two countries have signed an agreement to facilitate visa requirements for citizens travelling between the two countries for short periods of time.

The minister said the two countries shared views on key regional and international issues and would continue to work together to prevent terrorism, extremism and human trafficking and promote human rights.

In addition, Zameer said:

  • Both countries assured each other that they will continue to work for stability in the South Asian region

  • Both expressed their desire to stop the inhuman attacks in Palestine and bring peace to the region

  • The two also discussed climate change; they discussed measures to protect against global warming and climate change

Zameer invited the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister to visit Maldives at a convenient time.

Zameer is in Sri Lanka since Monday to hold talks to strengthen bilateral relations. This is Zameer's first visit to the country as Foreign Minister, and he will return on Thursday.
