The 18-year-old who was electrocuted while trying to rescue two children from an electrified puddle in Raa atoll Ungoofaaru is still in critical condition, his family said on Thursday.

Last month, the weather was bad all over the country, and the rains in Ungoofaaru caused some flooding on the roads as well. Electricity leaked from a cable connected to a lamp post into a puddle on the road where two children were playing in the water.

A family member of the young man Hussain Atheek told Atoll Times on Thursday that Atheek is currently being treated in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of IGMH. Atheek has also undergone dialysis due to water in his kidneys, he said.

The young man's family said:

  • Atheek’s body was badly swollen and disfigured; he was unrecognisable at first

  • His lungs and many internal organs were severely damaged

After the incident on 23rd last month, Atheek was first treated in the ICU of Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital. Atheek was brought to Male on 24th last month for further treatment.

  • Both the children, who were in the water, were injured as well in the incident, but it was Atheek who suffered the most, when he came to rescue them

  • He was severely electrocuted when he accidentally touched the electrified lamp post in his efforts to rescue the children.
