The body of Adam Athhar, who committed suicide while in police custody for taking a woman hostage and assaulting her, will be brought back to Maldives after his autopsy and will be buried Sunday evening.

Athhar died at 4:08pm on September 2 while undergoing treatment in the ICU of IGMH.

His body was taken abroad on Thursday for an autopsy to confirm his death.

Athhar’s body has been brought back to Maldives and his funeral will be held at the Hulhumale cemetery mosque at 10pm.

Three agencies are investigating the case:

  • Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM)

  • National Integrity Commission

  • An internal investigation is also underway to determine the police actions in the incident.

Athhar was arrested after being treated at ADK Hospital for injuries sustained when police hit him on the head while trying to rescue the woman on the night of August 29.

He was taken to hospital the following day after suffering from seizures and vomiting. He was then again taken to police custody after he was discharged from the hospital on August 31.

The court ordered him to remain in custody for pending trial. He attempted suicide while in police custody in his cell in Dhoonidhoo Custodial Jail.
