The parliament will hold an extraordinary sitting on Wednesday to appoint a person to fill the vacancy of the Prosecutor General (PG).

The post of Prosecutor General has become vacant following the resignation of Hussain Shameem on August 22. He resigned after parliament decided to impeach him on the grounds of no confidence.

Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah, who leads the ruling PNC, said that the sitting will be held on Wednesday to appoint a candidate for the post and the necessary steps are being taken.

The PNC has a large majority in the parliament and will have no difficulty in getting enough signatures to hold an extraordinary sitting, he said.

The sitting has not yet been put on the agenda of the parliament. The parliamentary administration told Atoll Times that no request has been made to hold such a sitting.

The PG position must be filled within 30 days of vacancy. Applications for the position were announced on August 27 and it expires on Wednesday.

Three candidates who are interested in this position have already cleared their criminal records. They are:

  • Former Chief Justice of the Criminal Court,  Ahmed Hailam

  • Lawyer Adam Shameem

  • Former High Court judge and Legal Secretary in the President's Office, Abbas Shareef
