Govt warns action on unlicensed traditional medicine providers

The penalty for such an offences is a fine between MVR 50,000 and MVR 1 million or imprisonment for a term of between three months and five years.

Health ministry on Wednesday warned that action will be taken against those who provide health services such as traditional medicine and cupping therapy without a license.

In a statement issued, the ministry noted that alternative medical services (especially traditional medicine and  cupping therapy services) are being provided in Maldives illegally.

The ministry said that any type of health service can be provided in Maldives only after registration and obtaining an operating license as per the Health Services Act and the Regulation on Operation of Health Services.

"Therefore, any kind of health service should be provided in Maldives after registering with the ministry and obtaining a license. Alternative medical services (especially traditional medicine and cupping therapy services) are being provided in Maldives illegally," the statement read.

The ministry said it is an offence to provide any kind of health service without registration and license under the Health Service Act.

Health Service Act referred to in the ministry's statement states:

  • The penalty for such an offences is a fine between MVR 50,000 and MVR 1 million or imprisonment for a term of between three months and five years.

  • The minister has the power to order the immediate closure of the establishment and take necessary measures against the health service professionals working in such establishment.
