Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) on Sunday requested the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to conduct a criminal investigation into compensation payments made to private individuals through a settlement committee formed during the previous administration led by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The parliamentary finance committee has approved an investigation into the involvement of three former government officials in the case:

  • Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih

  • Former Minister of the President’s Office Ali Shyam

  • Former economic minister Fayyaz Ismail

The PGO stated that the finance committee's report contained allegations of senior officials improperly allocating state funds and assets to individuals. Based on the report, the PGO formally requested the ACC to investigate the matter on Tuesday.

“After taking into consideration the contents of the report, this office finds that the matters are within the competence of the Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate,” the PGO noted in its statement.

President Mohamed Muizzu, after assuming office, dissolved the settlement committee formed by the previous government. Additionally, the Auditor General’s (AG) Office has decided to cancel nine compensation agreements.

Government allocated an additional MVR 61.2 million to pay Le Triveni JV and Dheebaja Investment Pvt Ltd. Between 2018 and 2023, the previous administration is said to have distributed 36 islands, six lagoons, and over MVR 2 billion to various parties.
