Body of 62-year-old Ibrahim Jauhari was found in the sea near Usfasgandu Monday evening.
Jauhari, a well-respected photographer, was recognised for his contributions to documenting the reform movement in the Maldives.
Police were alerted to the scene at 5:06pm and quickly taken Jauhari's body from the water, subsequently transporting it to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Eyewitnesses reported that Jauhari had visible bruises on his forehead, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Jauhari was known for his impactful work capturing photos and videos of demonstrations advocating for democracy in the Maldives.
He served as a photojournalist for the Independent newspaper, where his work highlighted crucial moments in the nation’s political landscape.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) expressed their condolences through a message from chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, who remembered Jauhari as a dedicated activist committed to the party's cause.
"May God grant his soul the eternal blessings of paradise and give patience to his family," Fayyaz stated.
