Maamigili MP and businessman Gasim Ibrahim on Tuesday cautioned the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent audio and video content created using artificial intelligence (AI) and circulating on social media platforms.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gasim highlighted that the videos falsely depict him promoting financial schemes encouraging Maldivians to engage in offshore trading and quick investments. The videos claim that these opportunities are facilitated through the Bank of Maldives (BML).
Gasim noted that the fabricated content is being shared on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram and is also spreading in Viber and WhatsApp groups. He urged the public to refrain from sharing these videos further and warned against falling for such scams.
“I urge all citizens not to engage with these fraudulent schemes,” Gasim stated in his message.
Gasim expressed concern that the realistic nature of some of these AI-generated clips has led individuals to believe they are authentic. He added that he has personally received some of these videos, which he categorically refuted as false and fraudulent.
According to Gasim, these schemes are often orchestrated to deceive people and extract money. He advised the public to exercise caution to avoid becoming victims of such tactics.
